SAFETY ADVISOR
Nhwelmen Construction is seeking a Safety Advisor to act as the primary health and safety representative on assigned sites. This role is responsible for promoting a proactive safety culture, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation in British Columbia, and supporting the implementation of our Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS).

General Duties & Responsibilities:
- Deliver and adapt OHS training programs to meet the needs of workers across all job sites
- Conduct on-site safety and jobsite orientations
- Maintain regular communication with the Site Leadership to ensure OHSMS compliance
- Advise workers of potential hazards and recommend preventative measures
- Respond to worker inquiries and concerns related to occupational health and safety
- Participate in pre‐job and tail‐gate meetings
- Facilitate communication and coordination between project teams and JHSC members
- Review subcontractor safety materials and personnel qualifications
- Coordinate and deliver safety training, coaching and orientations
- Conduct daily safety inspections and shar findings with site teams and management
- Identify and assess hazards, implementing appropriate controls
- Document and report unsafe acts or conditions requiring immediate correction
- Notify Construction Managers, JHSC , and BLT members of incidents and concerns
- Exercise stop-work authority when necessary to prevent risk
- Ensure timely reporting, investigation, and communication of incidents and accidents
- Lead and participate in incident investigations
- Facilitate weekly safety meetings and distribute meeting minutes
- Maintain and organize safety documentation using SiteDocs
- Develop and implement safety-related documents including:
- Emergency Response Plans,
- Traffic Management Plans,
- Standard Operating Procedures,
- Hazard/Risk Assessments,
- Safe work practices
- Ensure the job site is safe and work-ready (PPE, signage, permits, barriers, etc.)
- Perform visual safety inspections of heavy‐duty equipment and fleet vehicles
- Handle and place safety equipment such as signage, tools, lifting straps, and chains
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the management team
Key Competencies:
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail
- Practical understanding of civil construction and mining environments
- Thorough knowledge of OHS legislation and ability to apply OHSMS and client specific programs
- Ability to obtain, analyze, review and verify safety data
- Sound judgment and decision-making in safety-related matters
- Strong teamwork and collaboration across departments and work sites
- Flexibility to support workers across various shifts and schedules
- Self-directed with strong follow-through and minimal supervision
- Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and interpersonal)
Qualifications:
- Current CSO or NCSO designation, (COHS preferred)
- Extensive knowledge of WorkSafeBC legislation and the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in BC
- Minimum 1-year of recent experience in a health and safety role in British Columbia
- 2‐years hands‐on safety experience in construction (civil and/or mining preferred)
- Post‐secondary education in construction, trades, health care, or administration is an asset
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power‐point, Outlook)
- Experience in large-scale earthworks, underground pipework, or dam construction is an asset
- Demonstrated experience in technical safety writing
- Valid class 5 driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract and access to reliable transportation
Location: This position will be based out of various locations within the interior of British Columbia. This is not a camp position; employees provide their own transportation to/from the job site.
